Youths block Entebbe Road in Peaceful demonstrations
By Moses Sentamu
Police has today engaged in running battles with several youths for close to two hours at Namulanda along the kampala – Entebbe road who had brought traffic to a standstill as they partook in the peaceful demonstrations called for by the National Unity Platform (NUP) Robert kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
The youths who were holding placards with inscriptions like “We want our victory”, “Stop abducting people” and “Justice for abducted Ugandans” among other inscriptions remained peaceful even as security operatives chased after them with the Uganda flags they were raising up to end their demonstration.
On Tuesday while addressing officials of the Party at NUP headquarters in Kamwokya, Kyagulanyi announced that he will lead Nation wide peaceful demonstrations as part of the Party’s efforts to reclaim their victory.
“I call upon you to rise up peacefully, unarmed and demonstrate against a regime that has oppressed us,” he said to applause. “They’ve oppressed us, exploited us and turned into slaves in our own country. The women, whose sons are missing, the Ugandans who voted and your results were short-changed, come out and peacefully demonstrate against that impunity,” he said.
Since the announcement the Uganda Police Force and sister security agencies have been deployed in and around the Kampala metropolitan area to quell the peaceful demonstrations with several youths getting arrested in the first two days.
Some campaign organizers were reportedly using social media and leaflets reading “Time is Now. Join National wide protests to fight for our victory. M7 Tajja Kulayira”.
