Tertiary Institution finalists risk missing exams as defeated MP discontinues sponsorship

About 25 final year students at Bumangi Polytechnic, a tertiary institution in Bumangi, Mugoye Sub County, Kalangala District will not sit for their final exams if they fail to gather tuition fees. The tuition had partly been paid by defeated Kalangala Woman MP Aidah Nabayiga who suspended the funding.

The MP has been supporting up to 80 students at the institution since 2019. She canceled the sponsorship after she garnered fewer votes, losing her seat to Ms Helen Nakimuli of the National Unity Platform.  Some students have also resorted to fishing since they no longer have sponsorship.

None of the finalists sponsored by Ms Nabayiga has registered to sit for  Uganda Business and TechnicalExaminations Board (UBTEB) finals at the Institution which are slated to beging on April 8th.

Morris Kuule the Institution Bursar says they are now worried that the students will drop out without completion.

Each finalist is required to pay Ugx 400000 for School Fees and Ugx 200000 for registration.  One of the students Jordan Mutanginzi says education has now turned out to be a burden to him due to lack of resources.

Other students who asked not to be named said, even when they tried contacting the MP for a way forward, she could not pick their ‘endless’ calls. This reporter also contacted the MP but the call went unanswered.

The District Education Officer for Kalangala Emmanuel Nseko says measures are in place to ensure that mitigation is done.
