Police fire tear gas to disperse Sarah Kiyemba’s supporters

Masaka: Police in Masaka on Friday fired tear gas and live bullets in the air to disperse a procession of supporters of Ms Sarah Kiyemba who were passing through Masaka town after her nomination.

The operation was commanded by David Katunda, the Masaka district police commander.

Shortly after nomination Ms Kiyemba told her supporters that she came to unite people of Nyendo Mukungwe who have been divided among political lines.

“We decided to present our selves for leadership of Nyendo –Muungwe in bid to cater for all people regardless of their political affiliation because the area has remained undeveloped because of selfish politicians,” She said

Ms Kiyemba made the above remarks before leading a procession from Mukungwe to Masaka town however she was interrupted at Muto Hard ware Masaka city by anti-riot police and whisked her away to her home

Mr Muhammad Nsubuga , the southern region police spokes person said they decided to disperse the procession which was heading to central business area of Masaka city because they were not observing Covid-19 guidelines and to prevent looting on people’s business .

“What Ms Kiyemba and her supporters were doing is contrary to guidelines from electoral commission and Covid-19 measures which is bad for huge population in the city center so we decided to prevent her and take her back home,” She said

Other members who were nominated for Nyendo – Mukungwe municipality include Mathius Mpuuga Nsamba, Fred Mukasa Mbidde ,Micheal Ssekabire and Daniel Ntale Kisekka
