Police Blocks entry of NUP leaders at Kamwokya Headquarters

Police in Kampala has condoned off the NUP headquarters in Kamwokya, a suburb in Kampala, blocking entry and exit of people.

The party had organized prayers for its supporters who remain in prisons across the country.

More than 200 NUP supporters are said to have been arrested since 2021 by the Military on politically motivated charges.

It is upon this background that the party leaders organized a press conference and a National Prayer day this independence day to remember those who died and those who remain in detention.

However, according to the Party President Robert Kyagulanyi, the Police has blocked entry at the Party headquarters and is trying to block the function from taking place.

Also the official NUP tweeter handle posted on Monday morning that; “There is heavy military deployment at our secretariat in Kamwokya, and they are currently off limits. This comes after we announced that we would be holding a special prayer session for our comrades who have fallen victims of the regime’s brutal actions. What a shame.”

It is not the first time the Police is blocking opposition party activities in Uganda. Last week, police blocked a procession by NUP leaders from Entebbe Airport where supporters where welcoming the Party President from South Africa where he had engagements with the diaspora NUP team.

The official celebrations for independence will be held in Kitgum today. Preside t Yoweri Museveni is expected to preside over the function.
