Number of Contestants Picking “People Power” Nomination Papers Surges

People Power pressure group has by Monday this week registered up to 821 candidates picking nominations for sub country chairperson’s slot.

The slots have in the previous elections been registering lesser number of opposition politicians contesting to take over such leadership positions.

A source within the People Power Movement who doesn’t want to be named says the number of politicians registering for Political Positions has since inception of nominations been surging and would create an impasse since many people are contesting for similar positions.

“There must be democracy and openness when the nomination process is being conducted. We may lose trust if the politicians who lose elections start complaining,” the source says.

Uganda has a total of 2,062 sub counties, Town councils and Divisions according to the electoral commission.

The Movement is also registering an increasing number of contestants seeking nomination for the Parliamentary election and that of the District chairperson slot. The Movement has so far registered one Presidential Contestant, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

People Power Movement was established in 2017 after the election of Mr Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine as Member of Parliament representing Kyadondo East Constituency. The movement has since establishment been engaging other opposition political parties for joint efforts in ousting current President, Yoweri Museveni.
