Nambooze dismayed, starts productivity trainings for 13 year old Buiga teenage mothers

Mpigi District Woman Member of Parliament Teddy Nambooze remains dismayed by the ever increasing number of teenage children getting pregnant, producing children at Buiga Island.

The island, situated in Kammengo Sub County, is home of more than 10,000 people, most of whom are predominantly male, fishermen.

The MP, who was on a routine monitoring visit to the Island, last week found several teenage pregnant children.

The children who got pregnant before completing their Primary education during the COVID-19 pandemic are currently living a very tragic life while in dire need of getting resources to teach their children and also, provide basic needs since their husbands already abdicated duty.

In a bid to support such teenage mothers end the downward trend of struggling with life, the MP introduced a team of trainers from the Rotary Club of Rubaga – Lake View, a team from the National Women’s Council and the President of the Mother’s Union group Mrs. Josephine Kasaato to not only change the young mother’s mindsets, but also equip them with skills that would help them start income generating activities.

The more than 200 young mother’s were this week trained in making soap that can be used for domestic activities and for sale amongst the Buiga 10,000 people.

“We also invited the District Commercial officer to help these young mother’s with value addition to ensure that they not only benefit making soap alone but also, make enough to satisfy the market, get money and pay school fees for their children,” Nambooze says.

The Member of Parliament added that she has often times moved to contribute to such communities to improve livelihood, mindsets and education however, because of the limited resources and wide scope of coverage of the district, such income generating trainings ought to be done to ensure that the young mothers can afford to make some money, improve status of living despite having dropped out of school.
