The Fisheries Protection Unit has arrested and detained four leaders supposed to fight illegal fishing while practicing the vice.
The arrested, led by Richard Wavamuno the leader of the team supposed to fight illegal fishing in Kibanga, Mugoye Sub County in Kalangala District.
The team was arrested by a one Ssemakula, one of the informers of the Fisheries Protection Unit in Kalangala.
According to the Kassim Matovu, one of the fishermen at Kibanga landing site, the arrested were elected by the Fisheries department in Mugoye Sub County on the premise that they would ably fight illegal fishing.
“We were astonished when we realized that those supposed to fight the vice were the same people benefiting from illegal fishing gears. We want to fight had to ensure that we immediately suspend such people and elect those who can fight illegal fishing,” he says.
The arrested are now held in custody at Police in the area. They will be taken to Kalangala magistrate’s court for immediate prosecution.
Godfrey Ssenyonga Kambugu, the chairperson of the Association of Fishers and Lake Users Association of Uganda – AFALU says there is need to improve the capacity of all people selected to fight against illegal fishing in the country.
He also noted that there is need to wipe out all wrong elements engaging in the fight against illegal fishing in the country.
“We need to immediately act because, this is our business. We should sit down with the fisheries protection unit see how to look for better leaders that would help in the fighting against illegal fishing.” Kambugu says.
The UPDF marines, at the beginning of this year reinvigorated their will to fight against illegal fishing in the country months after the suspension of their commander Lt Col James Nuwagaba.
