Katikiro Mayiga: Endorsing Bobi Wine Leaves Kabaka’s Subjects Divided
Charles Peter Mayiga, the Buganda Kingdom Prime minister says he cannot endorse Kyadondo East Legislator Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine because such endorsement would leave Kabaka’s subjects divided.
Mayiga, who has served Buganda Kingdom for the last 29 years is arguably the most influential Prime Minister since the reinstallation of Kabaka Mutebi in 1993.
Speaking to Urban TV on Tuesday, Mayiga intimated that many subjects have asked him to endorse Mr. Kyagulanyi’s Presidential bid but has declined since the declaration would leave Kabaka’s subjects divided politically.
“I am not going to endorse NRM, FDC, People Power, or any other party. If for example I endorse People Power and Honorable Kyagulanyi, how do I deal with other people?” Mayiga asks.
He adds that “We have our interests as Buganda that are permanent and summarized in Ensonga Ssemasonga Ettaano (the five aspirations). My job is to bring everyone together. Let a politician who wants our support say that they support Buganda’s aspirations. Let Kyagulanyi, the People Power leader stand up and say ‘I support the five aspirations.”
The constitution of the republic of Uganda bars all cultural leaders and institutions from engaging in Partisan Politics.
While on NTV last week, Katikiro Mayiga said he is qualified to be the Ugandan President. He however added that for now, he is still serving the Kingdom and the Prime Minister. He also indicated that the time for a serious Muganda to lead the country is soon coming.
There has been growing resistance of leaders with in the Kingdom against Hon Robert Kyagulanyi’s Presidential bid, some of the leaders accusing the musician of being disloyal despite being a Muganda.
On July 31st last year during the coronation anniversary in Nkumba, Wakiso District, there was discontent from the Buganda Kingdom leaders was crowds cheered Mr. Kyagulanyi whenever the Buganda Kingdom television (BBS TV) broadcasted live a close up of the MP during the course of the function.
“The Journalist was in fact warned against such act.” A source told Entebbe Post.
