Five die as boat with 25 tons of cargo capsizes

Five people have been pronounced dead after a Cargo boat sailing from Lujaabwa Island in Mazinga Sub County, Kalangala District capsized with more than 25 tons of cargo.

The boat also had eight people on board. However, three people, including an assistant of the former Member of Parliament for Kyamuswa Tim Lwanga, a one Sam Kiyimba survived.

The deceased included a one Robert, Kasim who lived in Kisovve, Kato and a one Kayiwa, all from Lujaabwa Island.

The cargo boat faced strong winds despite having been heavily loaded. A first responder on call narrates that the accident happened between the waters of Nakatiba and Kananansi enroute to Lambu, a Landing site in Masaka District.

“One of the engines the cargo boat was using became damaged and couldn’t operate again hence the challenges,” the first responder told this website.

The survivors were rushed to Bwendero Health Center III for immediate first aid.

Many of the people within the island district continue to wonder why the vessel was moving at night with excessive cargo.

It is not the first time a cargo boat capsized on Lake Victoria. Last year, a cargo boat with more than 28 people capsized on its way to Kasenyi landing site leaving 20 people dead.
