The Democratic Party has registered a notable win percentage in the just concluded Parish youth council elections in Katabi town council, with successes in Kisubi, Kitala, Kabale. With Nkumba ward firing into a re-election after the results were nullified.

They have also been able to secure positions in all the other parish committees like where the National Unity Platform(NUP) and National Resistance Movement got a few nods.

However, the polling process was not unique from the most recent, disruptions and violence still prevailed on grounds of non eligibility of some voters and misrepresentation of candidates.

A brawl between candidates and locals

The process came to a standstill for several minutes after brawl sprung up between the candidates and locals present and a few bullets were shot in the air by the area police but the calm could not be restored until an intervetion was made by the Entebbe DPC ASp Micheal Kasigire and his men.

The elections would further go on with the NUP candidates absconding, making it a victory for the DP with no opposition. But the NUP faction called for the Electoral Commission to consider the results void since the process was executed by Police not the desidnated presiding officers from the commission.

The NUP is accused of making a coalition with the NRM in order to secure a win in the elections. The residents of Nkumba allege that members of the NRM have been tirelessly dishing out bribes in a bid to influence candidates and polling officers.

“They have been sourcing for members of several committees tirelessly, in order to bribe them, when the initial advances failed they decide to disrupt the electoral process, we know their ploy to snatch what belongs to us.” Maria Namugwanya a DP candidate in Nkumba

The DP candidates are faulted for masquerading as NUP members after they showed up at the polling station in People Power regalia, which according to NUP Robert Mutebi fostered confusion amongst his supporters.
