President H.E Yoweri Museveni has urged farmers to desist from carrying out farming activities along the river Nille Banks in a bid to preserve and accelerate access to water and sanitation for all people across the continent.
President Museveni made the remarks while officiating over the opening of the four day 20th Africa Water Sanitation Conference (AFWA) at Serena International conference centre in Kampala aimed at accelerating accessing water and sanitation for all across the continent.
The president encouraged the experts at the conference to teach the peasant farmers to desist from carrying out farming on river banks and lake shores.
President Museveni also challenged them to urge the locals to substitute firewood for electricity to preserve the environment.
“We must protect the wetlands and recover those that have been encroached on. If we interfere with water bodies, we shall be endangering the rain we get,” he remarked
In the course of the conference attended by experts from over 40 countries there will be discussions on new innovations, cooperation between nations among others in a bid to address the water and sanitation challenge in Africa.
Afwa is led by its President Dr Eng Silver Mugisha who is also Head of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation.
AfWA is a professional association of establishments, enterprises and utilities operating in the areas of drinking water, sanitation and environment in Africa.
