Abedi to Nambooze: Stop benefiting from Gov’t while denying others opportunity
Kimaanya – Kabonera Member of Parliament Dr. Abedi Bwanika has accused his Mukono municipality counterpart, Mrs. Bakireke Betty Nambooze of being the number one beneficiary of government who doesn’t want others to benefit.
Bwanika has been responding to Nambooze’s claims that there isn’t need to negotiate with government of Uganda on issues relating to the rescue of several National Unity Platform supporters who were arrested and arraigned before the court martial.
The supporters were arrested during the election season in different parts of the country. Well as some of them were released, many others have remained in prison for the past eighteen (18) months without trial.
However, a bid by the different stakeholders to secure their release through a alternative dispute resolutions has always faced a deaf ear from the State.
Earlier this year, after an engagement between the State through several government officials including the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, the Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, Security Minister Jim Muhwezi, Internal Affairs Minister Kahinda Otafiire and Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja on one side and the Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, Chief Opposition Whip John Baptist Nambeshe and other legislators on another, some of the arrested including legislators Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana have been released from prison.
It is upon such background that mixed reactions were drawn amongst several opposition members who immediately castigated those who were involved in the negotiations that saw the release of the two MPS.
While featuring on the NBS Barometer talk show, Dr. Abedi Bwanika proposed that such negotiations be intensified to ensure that imprisoned NUP supporters are free. However, a rebuttal from the Mukono Legislator left the two disagreeing on the modus operandi of freeing the political prisoners.
Nambooze argued that in negotiations, there is always give and take and the opposition must also name what they are willing to offer to government if they are to release the political prisoners through such negotiations.
In another encounter on Radio CBS FM on Friday morning, Nambooze accused Bwanika of being a mole serving two masters at ago. She said, the Politician has been inconsistent, “serving as a member of NUP while he is also the serving president of the Peoples Development Party. He must be having different intentions for NUP.”
However Bwanika responded by arguing that Nambooze has severally been in negotiations with the state and has always benefited from the amount of money that was offered to the MP to go for specialized treatment in the US.
“Why do they want to benefit from government as they leave all other people suffering in prison? If it is give and take, let Nambooze tell us what she offered government to be given money for medication in the US far and beyond what is mandated by Parliament,” Bwanika said.
He also added that the politics of being paranoid “benefitting from government while hoodwinking others into suffering is old and not necessary. All people need to be saved from prison.” He said.
There are also rumors that the Mukono Municipality MP (Nambooze) is fighting to downplay what the Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga has done as one of her efforts to lure the NUP President, Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi into appointing her the next Leader of Opposition.
“She is pretending to be loyal and is struggling to be appointed the next LOP,” a source at Parliament that asked not to be named told this website.
